Thai Eating out

KeosNow I now this is not supposed to be about eating out so please accept my apologies but I am on vacation!

After eating airport and plane food yestday we decided to give ourselfs a nice treat and go to Keos in Waikiki which is a fantastic Thai restaurant in Honolulu. We had the duck and the ‘Evil Jungle Prince’ and the ‘Bankok Duck in Plum sauce’, with appatizers spring rolls and green papaya salad. And as desert with had tapioca pudding. Oh everything was so good! The Evil Jungle Prince actually was quite like my thai panang curry.  The Duck I have nothing similar to but it was a very sweet plum sauce on thinly sliced tender duck over a cabbage mountain.

drinksOne thing I have that I also noticed was my drink. Nothing special in and by it self, an Arnold Palmer, Ice Tea with Lemonade. However the tea had a very delicate flavour of vanilla, no bitterness and a slight tingle which I don’t think came from the lemonade. I was very impressed, the waiteress told us this was Thai ‘Jasmine  Tea’ and called it Oliang, sadly the only thing I can find on the internet is coffe called Oliang. If anyone knows more about this left me know.

Airport and Airplane food

Well today is the start of our vacation and actual recipes will be a little slower. I’ll try to report on the cullinairy expiences as we go.

We managed to get to the gate with about 45 minutes to spare. Already fearing the flight with our little 1 1/2 year old. Knowing that the food is not stellar on any airline we decided to have a quick dinner before the flight. After some back and forward we settled on pizza from Wolgang Puck. Well they were ok, the spicy chicken was mostly red chilli flakes searing our throats and the mango chicken was not bad.

Then came the airplane food, and were we glad we had eaten before. Turns out Hawaiian is trying this new line of dinners called Ono (Yummy in Hawaiian). Well this was very far from ono. It is plain bad and should not be served as a main course. Mediteranian Pasta noodles,.. oil, feta, sundried tomatoes, olives and noodles. Yuck. If you wanted some real food like a chicken cesar salad (and I use real very loosly here) it would set you back another $10. We skipped on trying that.

Of course the baby was awake for the whole flight giving us moderate trouble and only litteraly right one minute before landing did she fall sleep. Not to wake up until the next morning. Aaah what a cute baby.

Birthday Chili

chiliIt was my sons birthday today so he got to pick his dinner. He wanted Chili. I added the chocolate glazed corn bread as a surprise. The recipe for all of this has been done before. We are going on a little trip to Hawaii starting tomorrow, which means I probably won’t be able to cook as much (or at all) for a while.

Teriyaki Salmon

teriyaki salmonA real yummy dinner today, Teriyaki Salmon with green beans and brown rice. Basically adapted the Teriyaki chicken recipe to Salmon, so I won’t repeat the recipe here.

Pasta Pie

pasta pieHeard about this recipe on the radio,.. sadly my version of it did not quite work out. It was yummy but not as intended.

Ingredients

  1. 1/2 onion
  2. 2 cloves of garlic
  3. 3/4 lbs ground turkey
  4. 1 jar of pasta sauce
  5. box of large pasta noodles + 1/2 cup of grated parmesan
  6. 1 package of grated mozarella cheese

Preparation

Prepare the pasta sauce as normal try to make it all as fine as you can. Maybe even put it in the food processor, I did not and it didn’t quite work for me. Cook the noodles, coat them with grated parmesan then stack them upright into a spring oven dish. Poor the pasta into the holes and cover with the cheese. Brown the cheese in the oven and let the pie cool for a bit before opening the spring.

Rhubarb Compote

rhubarbI remember seeing the rhubarb growing in my grandparents backyard, right next to the garage. It was always a treat when my mom made rhubarb compote. Today I stumbled across some rhubarb at the store and I decided to make it as a side dish for our dinner. As you can see, it was eaten almost complete even before I got a chance to get the camera out.

Ingredients

  1. 6 stalks of rhubarb, chopped
  2. 1/4 cup of sugar (or more depending on how sour your rhubarb is)
  3. 1 vanilla bean pod, sliced in half.

Preparation

After cutting the rhubarb place it in a large pan with the sugar. Split the vanilla pod in half and scrape out the seeds and put the in the pot. Don’t discard the pod though, simply place them in the pot as well and cook them along. Heat the pot up, the rhubarb will start to loose its water and disintegrate. Cook until you like the consistency then take out the vanilla pods. Dry the pods and place them in a closed pot with sugar to make vanilla sugar. Taste the compote to make sure it’s n0t too sour, if it is add more sugar.

Enjoy!
